The Top 5 Trends for Hats

  • 0

Yes, just when you thought it wasn’t possible, the Hats are Getting BIGGER and BETTER at the Party in the Park 2017.

Celebrating and getting dressed from head to toe was the theme of yesterday’s Party in the Park-the 14th annual signature fundraiser for the Emerald Necklace Conservancy to raise funds to improve and restore the lush green Emerald Necklace. The Emerald Necklace is not only something you hope your hubby or boyfriend will give you for Valentines day. If you don’t know what it is, chances are, if you’ve walked through Boston or Brookline, you’ve enjoyed it in some way shape or form. It spans about 1100 acres of meadows, woodlands and paths. I didn’t even know Boston had meadows, but after researching for my fashion segment on NESN’s Dirty Water TV, I learned not only does Boston have meadows and woodlands, but it has some amazing public spaces such as the Jamaica Pond Boathouse, which is being restored thanks to the funds raised at this party.

Getting ready for this party can be as fun as the party itself! I prepped with an awesome blowout the day before with Christine Woo at Salon Capri in Dedham, and got to have a coke with my pal Tiffany Dowd, who sadly had to jet out and could not make the event.

My hat flew in from LA days before, custom designed by Louise Green for Salmagundi. The morning of, I had my hair styled by Ashley at Salon Capri on Newbury. I pulled on the full outfit and she helped me with the finishing touches after my hat was on. After eyeing my outfit, a stylist at the salon aptly called my jumper a “onesie” making me laugh and decide that that would be the new name for a jumpsuit! (those who have ever dressed a baby or two probably know these onesies well!) My “onesie” was a gorgeous one piece jumpsuit by Roksanda from All Too Human. I usually wear a dress to this party, but wearing a pantsuit was empowering and very out of the box! Thank you to Jessica, Mo and Sam for helping select such an awesome outfit!

So here are your top 5 Hat Trends of 2017, and let’s see who followed the Laws Of Fashion:

  1. WHIMSICAL was one of my favorite themes:
  • My table hostess and cochair of the event Julie Hume Gordon wore a beautiful custom hatinator by Salmagundi. She followed the LAWS OF FASHION–her PROPORTION was on target, and for a tall lady that is extremely important. Too big a hat is not good and neither is too small a hat- think the GOLDILOCKS PRINCIPLE.IMG_4038
  • Dawn Oates of the Play Brigade in a bee fascinator by Ruby and Cordelia, Julie Wohlman in a floral wreath by Winstons FlowersIMG_4115
  • Laura Baldini in customised Viva Delfina LED and Hanna Commons in a custom Laura Baldini IMG_4074
  • Jill Scolnick in a cards fascinator with friends Dianna Reza and Masa

3. Go BIG or go home was another theme that pervaded:

  • Sofia Ostrer in a gorgeous pink jumbo sized fascinator and Adriana Hassan in Salmagundi. BONUS TREND:

6. MONOCHROME is a classic look and always follows the COLOR RULE:

  •  Nina Fialkow in a gorgeous ivory fascinator and dress. Following the MATERIALS RULE of keeping with light airy materials in her ivory fascinator to balance her overall look with her dress, and functionally makes for an ease of wear when your headdress is not weighing you down you can have way more fun!IMG_4131
  • Irina Aguirre and Anya in Marie Galvin IMG_4066

We must all tip our fascinators to Wendy Shattuck and her amazing efforts to honor her dear friend Justine Mee Liff who served as the parks commissioner from 1996-2002. Not only was it an amazing fashion fest yesterday, but we can feel good that all came together yesterday not only to clink our glasses and hats, but to help raise funds to plant more trees and keep our gardens in Boston beautiful and green.
