Summer 2015 has flown by and now we are quickly approaching the Back To School crazy time! When asked what trends we will see I took some time to compile my list and found a stellar list of top looks. Leading my list is Denim. It is making a huge comeback. After many years of being ousted from the wardrobe by athleisure wear (think lululemon), I’m happy to say denim is back. The skinny is being pushed to the background by flared, culotte, and any length of skirt–mini, tea length, or full length, as long as it is A-line.

And distressed denim as well as patchwork in the seventies vein are very hot. We are even seeing overall type jumpers skirts in denim. But we can’t deny the athleisure trend. It’s still going strong. I was disappointed in the current lululemon collection, as it has seemed to go hohum since going public, but other brands are making their way into the vernacular such as Crane & Lion, who brags a thicker weave as well as more innovative designs that wear well from the gym to the workplace.

Knitwear has also made a comeback and we are seeing chunky knits, as well as soft knits and the beanie hat is strong too. Local brands such as The Third Piece have held strong with these trends.

Bohemian chic is still in. Think not so matchy matchy, but a richness in texture and layering, such as putting a floral top with a plaid bottom, and don’t forget the fall scarf–it’s your best accessory.

For bags, the crossbody bags are huge as well as backpacks such as the Beckmann brand. For backpacks, in the elementary age, we are seeing lots of Frozen, Toy Story and Cars. For the high school age, woven and floral print with leather piping and trim.
For shoes, laced booties are hot as well as printed oxfords, and converse sneakers for both girls and boys.

And don’t forget about helmets! Need to protect those beautiful heads. Popular helmet styles that kids are also loving are the cartoon themed helmets like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle, and My Little Pony–it’s a great throwback to the cartoons of our childhood, and the makers have found a creative way to incorporate it into the design.
In summation: my top five trends to watch for Back To School 2015 are:
Denim: distressed, patchwork, flared, culotte
Athleisure: leggings with style, jeanie sweatpant style in silk, cotton, converse sneakers, stylish trainers
Knit: chunky and fine soft
Bohemian: no more matchy matchy preppy, think unexpected pairings like florals + plaids
Crossbody bags and character backpacks and helmets: Ninja Turtles, My Little Pony
